My PC suddenly shut down while I was playing a game.
I’m wondering if this might be a relevant discussion for PSU forums too, since I originally posted about it on PSU-related boards. Let me explain my situation:
Here are the specs of my PC:
* **Operating System:** Windows 10 64-bit
* **CPU:** Intel Core i7 8086K, 4.0 GHz
* **GPU:** NVIDIA/MSI GeForce Armor GTX 1080 Ti OC, 11GB VRAM
* **Memory:** Kingston 32 GB DDR4 4000MHz
* **Monitor:** ASUS PG279Q, 2560x1440 resolution, 165Hz refresh rate
* **Storage:** SAMSUNG SSD 970 Pro NVMe M.2, 1TB
* **Motherboard:** MSI Z370 A Pro E7 B48IMS.2B0
* **Power Supply:** Seasonic FOCUS GX-850, 80PLUS Gold certified, 850 Watts
* **Case:** BeQuiet Pure Base 600 Window Orange BGW20
* **Cooler:** BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 (250W TDP)
My previous power supply was failing, causing random shutdowns. I recently replaced it with a new one – Seasonic FOCUS GX-850, which seems like a high-quality product.
My PC is generally stable when gaming, but intense games still occasionally cause it to shut down with a “kernel event error.” I replaced the PSU without installing any software or drivers, and it’s still happening.
I’ve considered deleting some Windows services to remove updates, which has occasionally caused my PC to fail to recognize devices like USB 3.0 or my microphone – again, nothing. I initially thought the PSU might not be properly recognized, but I’m honestly a bit lost now because I already purchased a new one and it was expensive. The only thing that concerns me about the new PSU is that it doesn’t have a fan.
Another possibility I'm considering, though it's just a guess, is that my SSD is positioned directly next to the GPU, causing temperatures to reach 71°C – slightly above its maximum of 70°C.
Should I reinstall the operating system? What else could be causing my PC to randomly shut down during gameplay? It seems like a PSU issue, but I’m not sure what to do.
