My PC goes black screen and fan full speed in Windows when idle, but there's a strange twist ?
Recently my old PC tends to display a black screen when idle, but only occurs after opening Windows (even during boot). At first I assumed the issue was related to Windows, since I can access applications like games in Steam and they function normally. However, even when I enter Windows, the problem persists. I’ve tested various components—switching PSUs, unplugging HDD/SSD, replacing RAM, changing the VGA card—but nothing resolves the issue. When I enter BIOS, it works perfectly, and it remains stable as long as no HDD or SSD is connected. My suspicion is that the problem lies with the motherboard or CPU, though I’m unsure because performance remains unaffected during gaming. Given its age, upgrading might be necessary, and if it can be fixed, I’d like to give it to my sister.
It seems the issue started after updating the GPU driver for my 1050 Ti. If I upgrade to a driver version above 472.12, it occasionally freezes for a few seconds before restarting. I initially thought only drivers older than 472.12 caused the problem, but even beyond that, freezing continues. However, once I switched back to driver 472.12, the black screen disappeared.
I apologize, my English isn’t perfect—it’s not my first language.
You might consider using DUD to erase all remnants of old graphics drivers before attempting another revision.
You can find the uninstaller at the provided link.
Additionally, I rely on NVidia "Studio" drivers as they're claimed to be more reliable than standard "Gaming" versions. Note that I don't play games while you do.
Lastly, perform a complete Windows installation on a spare SSD; even a 240GB SATA drive is adequate for testing.
Thanks for your response.
I've already tried the first suggestion without resolving the problem. I haven't tested the second option either, but I still believe this isn't a driver-related issue because I rolled back to an older, stable driver, yet the black screen persists. For the last one, even after switching the SSD, the screen still goes black. That leads me to think it could be a motherboard or CPU problem, though I'm not sure. It seems the game runs fine, so I'm excluding the CPU as a possibility. Maybe I'm mistaken.
hey thanks for the response man~
Can you explain to me in detail about that ? What do I need to check or change ?
But to be honest I'm a little skeptical about it. since like I said, it was fine before the driver freezing/restart.
It gradually started in between that and becomes more frequent. even when i rollback the GPU driver and didn't get the freezing/restart, but the black screen and full fan speed stay.
There are numerous settings in Windows Power Options that you adjust to prevent the screen from sleeping, ensure drives stay active, disable power-saving features in hubs and wireless chipsets. Microsoft and the EPA encourage saving energy by turning off devices when not in use. However, certain hardware may not restart properly after power is restored, such as external USB devices. If your monitor enters sleep mode after 20 minutes to conserve power, in 'Power Options' select Display, choose 'Turn off display after', and set it to Never.
