After pushing my I7 9700K up to 5ghz, my HP Reverb gets too hot. I only changed the CPU and RAM, not the graphics card (which is a 2080ti). Is that okay?

It totally makes sense! Overclocking DRAM changes things BIGGER than you can imagine. Every single watt of electricity you put in turns into heat that needs to be taken away. Your CPU is pulling way over 200 watts and could easily hit 250 watts when working hard!!! You really need some serious cooling to handle all that heat so it doesn't get too hot. So yes, absolutely it makes sense! You are pushing a lot of power and all that extra heat needs to go somewhere.

Your CPU is pulling way over 200 watts and could easily hit 250 watts when working hard!!! You really need some serious cooling to handle all that heat so it doesn't get too hot. It's all totally worth it because making the system run faster uses way more electricity than saving it. Every bit of power you put in comes out as heat, so everything gets hot. Your CPU can pull 200 watts or even reach 250 watts when it's working hard and needs a lot of cooling to keep up with that much power! So yes, putting all your effort into overclocking makes total sense because you're forcing the system to use way more energy than normal, which means lots of heat has to go somewhere.

It is really sensible. You're sending out a lot of power, so the heat needs an exit route. Thanks for the clear reply. My Trollometer is showing me things now...sorry if I'm wrong about that part.

thanks so much. sometimes i have to edit things back, but this question was super easy to answer. it just looks like the OP has not been playing or learning enough, and didn't know what overclocking would do to the system. a better follow up question would be asking about cooling and how hot the CPU gets under load. most probably that setup can't handle the new speed and needs either fixing it up or lowering the overclock down a bit. 240mm water cooling is the minimum, but 360mm is preferred for good results.
