My games were suddenly slow and glitchy all of a sudden
Hi everyone, I was playing Bioshock Infinite last night and it worked fine for me today. But when I turned on my computer to work in the afternoon, Fortnite started acting really bad with lots of lag, stuttering, and low frames even on the lowest settings. At first I thought it was just because a new season changed things, so I tried Monster Hunter World too and got the same problems as Fortnite. It also worked fine last night for me. I didn't change anything on my computer, I didn't update drivers or install any programs. Nothing happened. When I checked Task Manager, my GPU was at 100% in every game. So I thought that was the problem. After a clean Windows reinstall, I tried Monster Hunter World and the problem is still there now, not using 100% of my GPU. I changed stuff on the NVIDIA control panel: I uninstalled NVIDIA HD Audio Drivers (I heard they could cause similar issues), disabled the NVIDIA overlay, turned off the windows game task bar, and reverted to a previous video driver. None of that worked. I already checked my temps; my GPU is around 50 to 60 degrees Celsius and can get up to 70 when playing modern games. My SSD and hard drives are basically empty. If anyone knows how to fix this, please help me. SPECS: Intel® Core™ i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 16GB Ram SDD Kingston 240GB Seagate 2TB HD Corsair VS650 (used for 3 to 4 years). EDIT: Lowering the quality of the games doesn't fix the issue, but it makes the drops happen less often.
What's the temperature on my GPU? How does it compare to my 650-watt PSU age?
How much space does the SSD have? Is the game on the hard drive or the SSD? Should I run a defrag command on the HDD?
How long was the hard drive clean before you cleaned it up? How often do you clean it? If you wait too long to clean and then have a huge cleaning session (not that's what you did), it can hurt the hard drive, especially if it isn't brand new. If there are no other recent changes we can tell you about because this happened suddenly, I'd check your drive health with a full diagnostic scan.
I clean my hard drives about twice or three times a month just to keep them running smoothly. Even after checking everything with a special test tool on both SSDs and hard disks, all reports came back clear—no problems found anywhere.
