My computer's mainboard, PCI connections, and data storage
Your question about charging speeds depends on your specific setup and motherboard capabilities. With a PCI card featuring USB C, you may achieve faster charging than standard USB ports if your motherboard supports advanced features like Quick Charge or Power Delivery. Even with USB A ports on the PCI card, performance could differ significantly based on compatibility and design. Always check your motherboard’s specifications to confirm support for these technologies.
I have no USB C ports at all (even on my case). I have several USB 3 and USB 2 Type A ports (which I'm confident are connected to the correct headers) My USB 3 ports tops out at about 100MB a second when transferring to an external USB 3 HDD (5400rpm, perhaps this is a typical transfer speed?), and my Quest 2 headset, when playing VR doesn't actually charge, it depletes (albeit very slowly compared to wireless use). Neither of these are particularly problematic for me, but just curious if a USB adapter card plugged into the motherboard would improve either of these scenarios, or is it just a built in limitation of my board.
It's about power, not information. USB-C can adjust voltage and current flow. I'm curious how this impacts a PCIe connection or data movement. USB 3.0 maxes out at 600MBps for transfers. You should verify your drive's write speed to ensure your motherboard isn't limiting performance. How do you power your VR setup?
It relies on the particular AIC, but some models offer extra power: https://www.delock.com/produkt/89001/mer...tml?g=1112. This allows for a broad selection of USB-PD outputs. Delock provides many cards with different setups. Transferring at 100MB/sec to a hard drive is typical, though performance may vary depending on the drive size or age.
A cable connects to a wall adapter, usually my Galaxy Note 10+ fast charger. I don’t require more ports, but I wasn’t sure if a PCI card adapter would perform better than the standard USB front/back ports. If the answer is usually "no," I’m not too concerned. With so many cards available and the effort needed to find the best one, it seems unnecessary given my needs. Thanks again for your assistance. Appreciate it!
