My computer shuts down unexpectedly during gaming and regular tasks, sometimes restarting itself, without any warning signs. Stress testing with Furymark Donut and OCCT-Coolermaster for CPU and GPU over about 30 minutes didn’t reveal any problems. These incidents began after I upgraded the PC case (NZXT), installed the RTX 4090 GPU, swapped to a 1050w cooler master PSU, and updated my motherboard’s BIOS. My system specs are as follows:
- Processor: AMD R7 3700X (purchased in 2020), heatsink replaced with AMD Wraith
- Motherboard: Asus Tuf Gaming X570 Plus (2020), BIOS updated recently
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GbX4 (32GB, 3200MHZ)
- GPU: Zotac AMP Extreme RTX 4090 (purchased in January 2023)
- PSU: Cooler Master MWE 1050 V2 Gold ATX 3.0/12phwr (December 2022)
- SSD: Samsung X2
- HDD: 1TB and 2TB drives (bought in 2014 and 2020)
- PC case: NZXT H7 FLOW (December 2022)
- Fans: 6x 140mm fans plus one AMD CPU Wraith cooler
- Operating System: Windows 11 (free update from Windows 10)
- Power supply: 230V output, wall socket to 6-pin extension and PSU form extension
I have tested the system with a 1050w PSU after removing the previous one, but the GPU still requires four connectors while only two were present on the old unit. This prevented it from turning on, though the GPU LEDs lit up briefly, indicating some power draw to the motherboard and triggering an error stating "GPU not powered."
The next day, after swapping back to the 700w Corsair PSU, the PC started working again. I attempted stress testing the CPU and GPU for several hours without any shutdowns. The GPU temperature stayed between 50–63°C, and the CPU remained at 70–85°C. No random shutdowns occurred during testing.
I noticed occasional creaking sounds from the case and temporary dimming of the CPU RGB fan during stress tests. I followed online advice and checked power settings, CMD Health, and system scans, but found no errors. A full system scan revealed nothing unusual. I also adjusted settings in Windows according to the guide. The GPU performed well in games, achieving 60fps at Ultra 4K with moderate usage (no DLSS), and ARK 2 also ran smoothly. CPU temperatures stayed between 45–55°C on IDEL, and both CPU and GPU never exceeded 70°C during gaming, ruling out overheating as the cause.
I still don’t understand why these irregular shutdowns keep happening and can’t pinpoint whether the issue is hardware or software-related.
This arrangement I struggle to visualize. -(Connect wall socket to 6 pin power extension and form extension to PSU.)
