My laptop is a reasonably priced machine capable of playing many games at around 30 frames per second. However, recently it’s begun to stutter and perform poorly, functioning adequately when playing with friends at 40 fps with maximum settings. After a break, returning to the game results in a sudden drop to 10 fps and a one-second delay in my controls—an issue I haven’t been able to resolve, which is why I’m seeking assistance.

Monitor Task Manager or Resource Monitor—select only one at a time—when not actively playing games and then when gaming.

It requires practice to become proficient with these tools and understand the data they present.

Examine your system's performance using three methods: 1) Immediately after startup, while idle. 2) Move the window to one side and watch as you perform simple tasks or browse. 3) During gameplay.

Identify any performance limitations.

Attempt to identify a method for "managing" decreased frame rates. Or determine what your computer initiates that causes frame rate drops—perhaps a backup or antivirus scan is involved.

Focus on comprehending which programs are active on your system, potentially initiated during…

Revise your online content by adding details about your laptop’s manufacturer, specific model, hardware specifications, and operating system. Describe the games you are currently enjoying and assess whether their suggested technical requirements align with your laptop’s capabilities. Employ the Task Manager and Resource Monitor to analyze system activity during typical usage versus when playing games, documenting any performance differences.

The item is in good condition. The task manager shows typical results, but the game experiences slowdowns. It’s 1.5 years old.

Monitor either Task Manager or Resource Monitor – not both simultaneously – when you are not playing games and then while gaming.

It requires practice to become proficient with these tools and interpret the data they display.

Analyze your system’s performance using three methods: 1) Immediately after startup, when idle. Then 2) Move the window to one side and observe while performing light tasks or browsing online. Finally, 3) During gameplay.

Identify any performance limitations.

Attempt to identify a method for “managing” frame rate drops or determine what your computer initiates and causes a drop in performance. Consider running backups or antivirus scans as well.

Focus on understanding the processes active on your system – programs started automatically at startup, those you’ve launched yourself, and the resource usage of each application, process, or service.

Regarding your power supply – if it's only 1.5 years old, it might be adequate. However, the PSU’s capacity could be insufficient for the power requirements of your games, especially if it's a lower-quality model. Lower-grade PSUs are often prone to failure sooner than their expected lifespan.

Also, review your update history; a software update may have been installed during a pause in usage.
