My computer isn't working properly. I'm not sure how to fix it.
Today I received my GPU back from the RMA service, installed the card along with all the drivers and software. I had to reconfigure the BIOS and also fix some issues with the PC. I downloaded the Windows 10 creators update to patch the operating system because it wouldn’t update on its own. After applying the update, the PC started working properly. Then I ran all the software tools to clean up the system and remove unwanted software. I used ccleaner to delete the old OS files, which would have removed the current Windows installation. I restarted the PC to complete the cleanup, but now it’s not functioning correctly. The Windows screen is missing, leaving only the BIOS logo and loading screen. I can hear all the window sounds, but I don’t see anything visible beyond the BIOS interface. There are no clear outputs from the display.
I have many important files saved on my main boot drive, including passwords and documents. Now I can’t access them. This is really frustrating. I spent nearly $2,000 on this setup, yet it hasn’t worked smoothly or been reliable. I’m starting to question whether it’s worth continuing.
My system specs are: MSI Z170 motherboard (with latest BIOS firmware), Intel 6600K @ 4.4 GHz, 16 GB DDR4 Corsair Dominator RAM, MSI 980 Ti, one 250 GB Samsung 850 Pro SSD, and a 1 TB WD drive, all running on Windows 10.
I’m feeling quite worried and am reconsidering my options. I might need to consider buying a prebuilt PC instead. This experience has been a huge disappointment.
So you can keep the main drive for now, install a fresh copy of the games on another drive or purchase a new one for a clean Windows setup. Once the PC is up and running, you can check if the data needs to be transferred from the main drive. If you're sure the drive failed, you can remove it and connect it to another computer as a secondary drive using a USB to IDE/SATA adapter. If the contents of the drive look intact, it likely means the OS is corrupted, and you can attempt to copy data from the faulty drive to the working one. It doesn't seem important whether it's an SSD or HDD.
So have you tried a clean windows install from a different dirve, say from a usb drive ? it seems as though somethink from windows system has been deleted which is causing widows not to load ? I'm no pro at this stuff though but that's how it looks, custom pc's can be a pain, mine had issues at start, now I'm waiting on new motherboard to be deliverd to finish its update.
yea but still one problem; I have files on my main drive. The other 2 drives have just games and saveable files and junk that I store. I just cant access the main drive with the files. I need a way to transfer the docs and sensitive data on the main drive or risk losing it all if I do a fresh install.
You don't require a completely new "prebuilt pc". Just update the operating system on this machine. By 'update', I mean reinstalling it. All the efforts with CCleaner and various cleanup tools likely disrupted the OS. Of course, your files might be gone. That's why we emphasize backups.
So you can keep the main drive for now, install a fresh copy of the games on another drive or purchase a new one for a clean Windows setup. Once the PC is up, you can check if the data is safe and then transfer it from the faulty drive to your connected computer. If you're sure the drive failed, you might remove it and connect it to another machine using a USB to IDE/SATA adapter. If the drive shows contents, it likely means the OS is damaged but the data itself is intact. You could attempt to copy the files from the bad drive to the working one.
yes its an SSD. Whats a good device for transferring data? and do I need software? The thing its an unknown display problem with windows. Like It has basic functionality and it gets sound. Just broken image. So something with microsoft display got damaged. Tbh, Im kinda done with this. I miuch rather have an expert who can installl windows properly with it being optimized since thats been my issue for some time. I dont like what windows 10 does when you dont remove the privacy problems and all the crapware on the build. So Im turning to some brebuilt manufacturers that will do everything correctly and keep it smooth. Ill just take the loss with the pc parts and move on. Rn. Im concerned with getting the files off the drive and savine the information.
Do you know any suggestions for moving files from your main drive? Since your OS seems faulty, I’m just trying to keep my data safe and move it. I might need to spend a lot on extra storage soon, so I want to understand how to transfer the files properly. I have a backup laptop that can help with this. Can you assist me in moving the data? What options are there for accessing files from a boot drive?
if you want to move only your personal data, connect it to your laptop using a sat link adapter or interface via USB and copy it over. Would you like a recommendation for a suitable device? Do you need software or can you just plug the drive into your laptop? As a beginner with no idea what you're doing, I want to suggest something reliable so you can protect your important files. Please don't joke—your data is important.
