My computer is acting weird lately. I think it's got a problem with its power connection.
So, i have been using my computer for about four or five months without any problems. Two days ago, I had a voice call with a friend who couldn't hear me clearly. When i checked the sound settings, it showed that my microphone was making a continuous buzzing noise. The buzzing stopped right when i touched the pc case. After doing some research, i found out that my pc is not properly grounded even though everything worked before since then. I am wondering what could possibly cause my computer to become ungrounded and it would be safe for me to use or touch the pc while this happens?
It's easy to tell if something is grounded with a multimeter. If your dad works in electrical stuff, he knows how. But I think if the buzzing stops right when you touch the case...and nothing else else touches it like that mic...then you should check to make sure the case is grounded.
Have you checked that everything is connected properly? It's probably just a bad plug or a loose connection at the wall outlet. If you plugged in something while the power was on, that might be what broke the ground. You can use a cheap outlet tester to see if there is actually a ground wire. It would take a long time for all outlets in your whole house to lose their ground wires. Usually, it's just one specific spot where the metal rod goes into the ground that went bad. Maybe you should check your breaker box too, because sometimes a connection inside there gets worn out over time and stops working properly.
So when i plug into my pc, it grounds everything and the mic works perfectly. But right now something is making my mic buzz. It feels like power is coming through the wires. I got a new PSU cable and an extension cord but the buzzing is still there. My mic cable looks okay too; just checked it out. Would i need to buy a whole new PSU? Or is there a way to ground the thing down so it stops buzzing? I searched everywhere online all day and couldn't find anyone with this same issue. Thanks for responding! Edit: I tried using different outlets but the problem is still here, so it's definitely a PC thing too. Also i should ask my dad to check this because he has been an electrician for 25 years now and i didn't know why i never asked him before.
You can easily check if the case is grounded using a multimeter. If your dad is an electrician, he probably knows how to fix it. I think that if the buzzing stops when you touch your case and nothing else, like the mic or headphones...then I would make sure the case is grounded.
