I’m attempting to play Call of Duty: World at War through Steam, but during startup it repeatedly attempts to alter my display’s resolution, resulting in a continuous cycle. Consequently, I must reboot my computer to halt this process. Despite reinstalling the software and adjusting Windows display settings to align with the game’s resolution, the issue persists.

Did you obtain the game via Steam, either by purchasing it or downloading it?

If you’re using Windows 10, confirm that the game files are verified through Steam's properties. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, try creating a shortcut on your desktop and launching the game with elevated administrator privileges or compatibility mode.

After reinstalling and checking the files, I’m unable to execute with elevated privileges – no administrator option is presented. Considering I'm the sole user on this machine, I don’t believe that’s the root cause. We suspect a problem with the DirectX driver, which initiated during installation. However, we’re puzzled as to why the game isn't launching correctly. We are using Windows 10.

Would you have attempted to launch it in windowed display mode?

What’s the best approach for me to accomplish that? It isn't generating a list of options or anything like that.

A minor update indicates we successfully ran the game on a different display, suggesting an issue related to either resolution or compatibility with the specific monitor. The original screen (which is malfunctioning) utilizes a 1280x720 resolution with its “size” setting configured to “scan only”. Conversely, the functional monitor features a 2560x1080 resolution without any alterations to its settings.

I’m puzzled by this discrepancy, as it appears the second monitor is more aligned with the game's requirements. Could there be a problem originating from within the software itself or concerning the screen’s capabilities? Are there any adjustable parameters within the game files that could modify its launch behavior?

We've attempted to run the game on a different display, and it performs perfectly there, suggesting an issue related to resolution or compatibility with the original monitor. The first display – which isn’t functioning correctly – has a resolution of 1280x720 with its "size" setting configured to “just scan.” The second display, on the other hand, has a resolution of 2560x1080 and lacks any modifications.

I’m puzzled by this situation, as the second monitor should be a more suitable match for the COD WAW software. Could there be an issue with the game’s code or a problem specific to the screen itself? Are there any settings within the game files that could be adjusted to alter its launch behavior? It seems counterintuitive that it would work in reverse.

I've determined the issue stemmed from the display and the "Just scan" configuration. To properly initiate the game, you must configure your monitor to a 16:9 aspect ratio. Subsequently, adjust the game's settings and, if necessary, enable the ability for it to launch reliably each time. My hypothesis is that the game was attempting to locate a suitable resolution, yet the monitor’s unusual request due to this setting caused it to repeatedly search for a display resolution, ultimately resulting in a continuous cycle.
