Hello, I own a Ryzen 5 1600 since 2017. Probably the first one I bought was a 2000 model, but I upgraded to this CPU anyway. My motherboard is Asus Prime B350 M-A. It supports Ryzen Gen 3 in the BIOS settings, so I can use a Ryzen 3 1200 plus a Ryzen 7 3800X and eventually a Ryzen 9 3950X. This setup lets me run all Gen 3 compatible Ryzen 5 1600 models with stock air cooling. My motherboard has 16GB RAM, two 8GB modules at 3000MHz, a 500W power supply, dual monitors, and a 1080p display. I plan to add an NVMe 6GB SSD for gaming, video editing, photo editing, Adobe tools, streaming, and learning coding. Which Ryzen Gen 3 model would work best for upgrading? It currently functions perfectly without needing a liquid or water cooler.
Budget recommendation leans toward Ryzen 5 3600; however, a 3700X could suit your editing needs if you have the funds.
I don’t have a budget, so I can purchase anything. I recall Linus mentioning a video where he talks about a Ryzen 3 model that only uses a liquid cooler. I don’t remember the exact model, but I said it works with the stock cooler. The best setup would be top-tier CPU paired with a stock cooler.
It can handle the theoretical requirements (the bios will manage it), but the VRMs struggle to provide more than 3600 or 3700x. I wouldn't attempt a 3900x or overclock anything. Running at 2700x would also be challenging since it demands higher power.
One of the 65W configurations should work well on that board. It also handles the 8C/16T Gen 1 nicely, especially with proper airflow around the power modules. Get the board ready.
Start by checking your current needs for editing or gaming. If the R5 3600 offers good value, it might be ideal. For video work, I’m unsure but a R7 3800x or a slightly overclocked 3700x could work well. When upgrading, consider switching to a B450 motherboard instead of B350, and opt for faster RAM like 3600MHz or even 3200MHz with an overclock.
Basically may you tell me about this board VRMs ? Right now OC to 3.8 is fine no crash but CPU slow and old0 all cores to 3,8 so i only have to buy 3600 ? thinking about 3700x
