i own a lenovo y50 with gtx 860m, 4gb vram, and core i7 with 8gb ram. before learning about overclocking, playing far cry 4 wasn’t smooth enough for me, so i started trying to boost my fps. the first time i did it, it worked well and my fps jumped significantly, letting me play with less lag than usual. however, after about two weeks, i noticed that when i opened the game menu, it would display 81 fps during overclock but only 66 fps now. this is still better than without overclocking. so is there an issue? is my gpu malfunctioning or something? i’m trying to overclock every time i play, which is my first attempt at doing so. i also play while plugged in. the fps difference is around 30 when unplugged, and games like far cry 4, csgo, or black ops 3 cause stuttering and drop back to about 15 fps.

It might be incorrect, possibly due to thermal protection. I understand laptops struggle with overclocking because their cooling systems are constrained by size and weight. That's just a consideration.

I looked up the specifications, and the GTX 860M is rated for about 73°C. Your current temperature is close to that, so it might be a bit high.

I looked up the information that the GTX 860M can manage around 73°C, and my temperature is close to that. Is it too high?
During gaming, have you run a stress test? It seems strange since it previously gave a higher frame rate. Could the battery be worn out or something similar? How much heat did you generate?

Kevin L asked if Jason_141's GTX 860m can sustain around 73°C during gaming, noting their current temperature was close to that. They wondered if it was too high and suggested checking other stress tests. Jason mentioned using Furmark and found a higher frame rate before, possibly due to battery drain. Jason's specs were 135 cores and 300 memory, and they only tested Unigine Heaven today, noting overclocking still improved performance by about 5 fps.

the temperatures are high while gaming, around 75 degrees. i don't believe the battery has degraded because the laptop is brand new. i used it for roughly a month.

I looked up the information online and found that the GTX 860m can manage temperatures near 73°C. My current temperature is close to that. It seems during gaming it might be a bit high. Have you run any stress tests on it? I noticed a higher frame rate before, maybe the battery was low or something. Your specs are: OC +135 core and +300 memory. You only tested Unigine Heaven today. Overclocking still gives about 5 fps more. Consider changing the thermal paste to check the temps.
