I have a brand new Asus RT-AX68U router and I'm using Spectrum cable which says 300 Mb. When I use just my old Spectrum modem and router, my speed test shows about 300 Mbps. But when I put the Asus router in place of the old one, my speed drops to around 10 to 15 Mbps through a web browser. If I go back and connect the old Spectrum router again, my speed jumps back up to 300+.

Inside the Asus router settings, under Adaptive QoS > Internet Speed, the test shows about 370 Mbps even though QoS is turned off. Why does this happen? How can I fix it so my speeds match what they are when using the old setup?

I didn't realize Asus put speedtest inside router software that's cool. This is weird because your computer uses exactly the same internet path as the router. You would think the tiny CPU chip on the router makes things slow, but it doesn't. Do you have another device to try? Maybe check some random stuff yourself. Make sure IPv6 is turned off in your PC. Also, make sure there are no special DNS settings in your browser. Try changing DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 in the router settings or maybe test those same numbers on your computer.

I ran the test again before making any of those changes, and it went up to 90 Mbps but is still not as fast as it should be. I did this on a Windows 11 computer and got speeds between 260 and 320 Mbps when IPv6 was turned off. I also stopped using Secure DNS in Chrome. For the IPv4 settings, I put 1.1.1.1 first and 8.8.8.8 second. After restarting my PC, nothing changed with the speed.

About 90mbps usually means there is one port that can actually work at full speed, like 100mbps. I know the Merlin firmware on Asus shows every single port and its speed. It's almost always just the cable between your PC and the router. You should be able to see the speed in the status of the ethernet port. If it says 100mbps then you probably have a bad cable. Cables sometimes work on some machines but not others. I would really like them to just stop working completely if they are broken. Please make sure you use a high-quality cable. It only has to be cat5e but it must be pure copper with wire size 22-24 (none of those flat or thin cables will do).

Just wanted to report it was the cable (flat cable). Now I have 300 Mbps - thank you!
