Hi,
A month ago, all my music disappeared from my second hard drive (SSD). I don’t know why this happened. Luckily, I had a backup on a portable drive for such situations, and most of the music was still accessible. Some files required re-downloading from iTunes. Now I’m unsure if this actually matters, but more than half of my music comes from original CDs. For over 20 years, I’ve moved the same songs multiple times whenever I upgraded my computer—from Windows 98 to now (Windows 10). They all played fine.

But now, most of these tracks no longer work. Instead, I get a message saying:
"Window Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file."
That’s it. No other options. Nothing else. No extra buttons to press.

Interesting, other tracks from original CDs are still playing without issues. I’ve tried different players like Groove Music and VLC, but they also show similar messages.

Since computers no longer have CD drives these days, it’s making it difficult for me to copy the files onto my system. Also, I’m sadly missing some of the CDs. What’s happening? How can I fix this?

The situation varies based on the type of storage media and its environment. Additional details can be found here: https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/hard-drive...edia-last/ It's not accurate to say people stop using CD/DVD drives for PCs, though many still own them. For example, my and my wife's PCs both include a CD/DVD reader/writer. The full specifications with images are available in my profile. Currently, external CD/DVD drives can be purchased when your PC lacks a 5.25" bay, or if you're using a laptop.

It seems like everything is okay except for the DVD drive, which isn't working at all. I didn't realize a portable drive was needed, but fortunately they're not that costly. It's frustrating that I can't play my music anymore. Luckily, I have some time off soon to try copying my CDs and hopefully resolve this problem.

CD/DVD players are among the shortest-lasting hardware in PCs. Over the years, I've swapped out simple 10+ drives because they eventually stop reading discs. Since the drive itself isn't too costly, it's convenient to get a new one.

Why not stream music directly from the internet? For example, YouTube playlists (which I've used myself) or internet radio (like www.di.fm, which I also listen to often).
