I want to be clear; my PC seems to now be working just fine but it's strange behavior makes me feel like something may be about to fail and so I want to check in here. When shutting down my pc through windows-> shut down , normally I can hear the power supply do one 'click' as everything loses power, it's quite pronounced and has always been there. Last night however, I hear 3 distinct clicks in a row, with ~0.33 of a second between each click. After the third click, the fans finally stopped spinning and it looked to be off for about a second. Then, suddenly the fans hummed back up, and it kept going for a few seconds. Then I heard 2 clicks, and it shut back down. And again, the PC booted back up, but no clicking. I was a bit shocked and thought I should help it boot down, so I held the power button down and it shut down. I unplugged the power supply, and pressed the power button a few times. I then turned the power supply off on the back and went to bed. This morning, it boots up like nothing happened. What was that? Is it indicative of any particular failure about to happen? I opened the case to see while its running and noticed a strong red light coming from behind the mother board. I can't remember if that was always there or not and don't have easy access to it. Is this relevant? OS Window 10 pro 64 BIOS 1.5 CPU Ryzen 5 2600 RAM 16gig GPU GTX1660 TI MB MSI B450 TOMAHAWK Power Supply Corsairs TX650 SSD WD_BLACK SN750 1TB HDD some old junk

It occurred twice during shutdown. The same sequence repeats consistently. The three presses sound noticeably different from the usual 'click' when power is cut off. Uncertain if this provides any clue. Once it rings twice, it briefly powers on before automatically shutting down. Still unclear what this means.

Suddenly the machine began clicking even while driving normally, and it continued without stopping. I touched the parts near the sound source and felt the old HDD vibrating. After turning off the PC, the clicking stopped completely. This has never happened with an HDD before, especially not during shutdown. The issue is now resolved.

It seems the issue likely comes from the power supply unit. You might not be aware of that, but I’d suggest checking it there. Discard the outdated HDD and proceed with simple troubleshooting; it could be a clicking PSU.
