I'm working on an older PC to serve as a family and office computer for the study room. Recently, I've encountered some problems with the motherboard. The Ethernet connection seems to be completely faulty—no lights come out from the port, and Windows reports it can't connect. I've tried troubleshooting, but the issue persists. The system indicated that the drivers weren't installed properly. I resolved this by downloading the LAN drivers from MSI's website onto a USB stick and installing them on another PC. Almost immediately after installation, an error appeared stating that the system couldn't detect a LAN controller. While fixing this, I noticed the HDMI port wasn't functioning when the PC was started without a graphics card. According to the BIOS (current version), nothing appears connected to any of the USB ports, even though the mouse and keyboard work perfectly. The BIOS also confirmed that nothing is plugged into the Ethernet port. I attempted to flash the BIOS, but it didn't make any changes. Even swapping out the GPU and hard drive didn't help. I'm running low on options and don’t have funds for a replacement. The CPU is an Intel i5-4430, and these issues began today. Previously, this hardware had no problems. Currently, the only way to access the internet is via USB tethering from my phone.

Search for the network controller chip on the motherboard, probably a Realtek RTL model, and test it. If it feels warm, it likely failed and should be replaced.

I believe I located it; it doesn't seem warm, but the chip is very tiny making it difficult to identify. The label on the site says the model is the Realtek 8111E.
