MSI Z590 TORPEDO isn't recognizing HDDs.
Problem: HDDs aren't showing up. I've tested various SATA connections and power cables, but nothing works. I made sure the M.2 #2 slot isn't disabled by using it directly. I also checked for updates to the power supply. I've used different HDD models and sizes before. I switched from UEFI to CSM settings, but changing that always causes a reboot failure back to UEFI. I'm not familiar with CSM or UEFI, so I haven't adjusted them further. Operating system: The issue started before installation, but it's Windows 11 Home. Hardware: i5-11600k processor, integrated graphics, MSI Z590, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD in M.2 #2, 750W Corsair power supply, CPU cooler 212 Halo Black Bios. BIOS update was applied yesterday with no errors visible. Storage display in BIOS showed nothing. This is my first PC build—am I damaging the motherboard? Everything else seems normal.
It’s challenging to accomplish this task. I’m unlikely to have damaged anything unless your name is Linus. Have you reset the CMOS memory afterward? It’s advised to disable it after flashing a new BIOS. CSM refers to the old UEFI mode, but since Windows needs UEFI, keep it off. Regarding the HDDs not showing up, your BIOS might have an option that must be turned on for SATA ports to work. This could be something like AHCI (names vary by manufacturer). Since you’ve tested several drives, they’re probably still functional but just in doubt. As a precaution, try connecting your HDD to another computer to verify it works. Finally, confirm whether you’re using HDDs from a NAS enclosure or another source. WD has reported issues with those drives not working unless a specific pin is adjusted.
