Hey everyone, a few days back I shared my attempt to use older components—specifically an AMD Ryzen 9 3900X and an MSI B550 Gaming Plus board—for a son’s PC upgrade. The setup is running smoothly except for a major issue: no boot, no display, and the boot LED stays on. Everything else seems normal—CPU, RAM, VGA work as expected—but the system freezes when it tries to power up. There’s no operating system visible, and the NVMe SSD doesn’t show anything. The lights are confusing, unlike typical RAM or CPU indicators. My keyboard and mouse still function, but the screen remains blank. Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
- Used a different MSI RTX 3070 GPU—still stuck on the boot LED.
- Swapped PCIe slots for the graphics card—no improvement.
- Tested another RAM stick, same as before; nothing changed.
- Ran a BIOS reset and updated my CMOS.
- Disconnected all peripherals except the CPU.
- Reassembled everything carefully, checked connections.
- Considered a different power supply and motherboard.
I’m open to suggestions or any experience others might have had with similar setups. My goal is to figure out what’s wrong before deciding whether to keep the current build or start over. I’m also curious if any of my older parts might be faulty after all these adjustments. This situation is frustrating, but I’m determined to solve it.

I just wanted to share a quick update. Although I still think the advice from @Poinkachu is the right path, the computer keeps behaving oddly. After a few hours of use and setting everything up, I had to restart it (already several times), but this time I got a black screen and couldn't boot into Windows. I tried moving the DP cable to different ports and rebooting multiple times, yet the issue persisted. It's strange to see GPU output, the monitor waking from sleep, and a brief white cursor appearing before the BIOS splash, but it just turns black. Also, the VGA LED started to glow, which makes me wonder if it's not the GPU. I was also thinking about updating the BIOS, so I managed to boot into it again using a different HDMI connection. Checking the BIOS version, I visited MSI.com and found newer releases, including one from January 5, 2022, which claims Windows 11 support. I flushed the BIOS and it seems to be working better now—though I'll keep an eye on it. Putting it to sleep and waking it up works fine so far. Honestly, I'm a bit worried about shutting it down completely right now; maybe let the kid finish some gaming beforehand. I'll check again if anything changes, but I suspect this might be a BIOS problem (since it was listed on a beta version too).
