MSI Afterburner Won't Open
MSI Afterburner Won't Open
I attempted to install MSI afterburner 4.2.0 to enable the frame limiter in Fallout 4. I experience significant input lag when using v-sync, especially with a 144 Hz monitor, which caps performance at 50 FPS. Increasing the monitor to 60 Hz results in a 30 FPS frame rate. Despite this, afterburner or Rivatuner fail to launch, leaving a blank desktop in Task Manager. I usually rely on Precision X for overclocking but have removed it.
I previously used afterburner successfully with just the frame limiter, and I've reinstalled it several times without success today.
My system specifications are:
- EVGA GTX 970
- i5-4690k
- Logitech headset and mouse
- Asus Sabertooth MK 2
Did you ever use two monitors simultaneously? It might have been showing windows from a monitor that wasn't there, and I experienced the same issue when I switched back to a single monitor.
Sergeant_Sneaky asked if two monitors were running at once, mentioning possible display issues. He clarified he uses two monitors but repositioned them, yet they didn't appear. He also noted that Afterburner isn't visible in the icons tray and wondered if it should appear there.

You mentioned having two monitors, but it seems like they might be showing the wrong screen. I thought maybe a monitor was malfunctioning, but it still didn't appear. I also noticed Afterburner isn't listed in the icons tray. Should it be there?
Also, when I tried to reinstall Precision X, I followed the steps and it worked. Did you try right-clicking and running it as an administrator?
Sergeant_Sneaky asked about running two monitors simultaneously, mentioning possible display issues. He clarified he has repositioned them and still doesn't see the problem. He also noted Afterburner isn't visible in the icons tray and wondered if it should appear there. He sought advice on reinstalling Precision X, avoiding Afterburner, and tried running it as an administrator without success. He expressed a desire to limit FPS in Precision X for smoother gameplay, especially at higher refresh rates.
Brandonforty2 asked Sergeant_Sneaky about running two monitors and whether the issue might be with the Afterburner icon tray. Sergeant_Sneaky clarified that they currently use two monitors but have repositioned them, and the second monitor still didn't appear. They suggested checking if Afterburner should be visible in the tray and mentioned trying to run it as an administrator. They also noted they hadn't managed to reduce the refresh rate with Afterburner and were considering reinstalling Precision X for better control.
Rivatuner was brought up as a potential solution, though performance dropped with higher refresh rates, indicating Afterburner might be the real issue. There was uncertainty about whether Rivatuner was installed correctly, especially since it affects other games like CSGO.
Sergeant_Sneaky shared feedback about running two monitors and noted inconsistencies in display behavior. He mentioned repositioning the monitors but still experiencing issues. He also reported that Afterburner isn't visible in the icons tray and questioned whether it should appear there.
He discussed reinstalling Precision X, suggesting it might be the best option given his familiarity with it. He mentioned trying to run Afterburner as an administrator but found it didn't resolve the problem.
Rivatuner was suggested as a potential solution, though his FPS drops with refresh rate changes. He noted Fallout has a locked frame cap and that changing it isn't possible without affecting other settings. He also tried installing Rivatuner separately but encountered issues.
Brandonforty2 also asked Sergeant_Sneaky about running two monitors simultaneously. He mentioned he had experienced similar issues before and clarified that the problem might not be with the monitors themselves. He also noted that Afterburner isn't visible in the icons tray and wondered if it should appear there.
He discussed reinstalling Precision X, suggesting it might be the cause of the issue, and recommended disabling Afterburner temporarily. He tried running Afterburner as an administrator but it didn't resolve the problem.
Rivatuner was mentioned as a potential solution, though his FPS drops with refresh rate changes. He questioned whether Afterburner was restricting the FPS and wondered if Rivatuner could help control it.
Fallout's locked frame rate feature was also referenced, with the user noting that the cap varies depending on monitor refresh rates. He explained that Fallout 4 uses Vsync, which limits the frame rate to match the monitor's refresh rate, and suggested disabling Vsync for better control.
Sergeant_Sneaky shares his thoughts on Fallout 4's Vsync settings. He explains the issue with the refresh rate cap and suggests disabling Vsync to control FPS. He mentions his monitor's 144Hz display and how Vsync adjusts to maintain a consistent frame rate. He also expresses interest in using afterburner to achieve a stable refresh rate.
