Hey guys, this is probably a really stupid question but I need some help. So recently the drive for my old computer stopped working, and because the computer is pretty old anyway I decided to do a complete PC upgrade. On that drive, I had Windows 10 installed. My question is do I need to purchase a Windows 10 activation key for my next build? Can I just log in with my Microsoft account and be good to go?

You'd need to purchase a new key; a W10 Pro key on eBay is suggested for under £5.

Purchasing W10 keys from the grey market carries significant risks, and attempting it can lead to failure or fraud. Be ready for possible issues with obtaining the code or its functionality.

Avoid purchasing a Windows 10 license. Simply relocate the HDD to your new PC. If issues persist, fix the installation. You’re free to transfer Windows 10 to any device whenever you wish—provided only one key remains active.

It’s one unique key per machine, with the motherboard being the identification element. You can swap any component except the motherboard while keeping windows functional. A fresh key is required when transferring to a different computer. Also, never transfer windows between systems. The installer needs particular drivers tailored to specific boards, and these are essential for proper system performance. Install the software anew on the new setup.

This might not be accurate with OEM keys, since they seem tied to the motherboard. This prevents people from recovering Windows 10 from older laptops. Don't rely on this, as I'm not an expert. Edit: one of my statements was incorrect based on @Docretier's reply, so I took it out. Updated March 13, 2018 by GoldenLag Error

I purchased more than ten keys from eBay and they all functioned properly. There’s nothing concerning about it. If they fail, you can quickly reclaim your £2 from PayPal.

I’m thinking we’re among the most fortunate people on the planet, but Win10 pro keys are expensive. It’s tough to imagine getting them at such a low price, wouldn’t it?

They likely come from discarded OEM computers. I'm sure they function, and if not, I can request a refund.
