Moving OS
I just purchased my first SSD and don’t understand how to remove the old HDD while keeping data safe, or how to transfer everything to the new drive. Please help me out—I’m not sure where to start.
Ensure all crucial files are saved. Perform a fresh installation of Windows on your SSD. Organize your HDD using disk management.
Clone your operating system and apps to the new SSD or perform a complete Windows reinstall. I suggest the latter. Below are steps for a fresh installation:
- Safely archive your valuable data (such as photos and documents).
- Save the Windows 10 ISO file to a USB drive: https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software.../windows10
- Power down your device, disconnect the main drive, and connect the SSD along with the USB.
- Access BIOS settings and exit via the USB connection.
- Continue installing Windows while repeating 'next' as prompted.
- After installation completes, power off your PC.
- Reconnect the old HDD (leave the SSD connected), enter BIOS, and switch off the SSD.
- In Windows, format the previous HDD to erase its contents.
Use Macrium Reflect through the forum discussions. It's a quick and simple process.
