Moving operating system from laptop to PC
Moving operating system from laptop to PC
This could really save you money. Your laptop has been struggling for four years, and you upgraded from Windows 7 to 8.1, trying to improve performance. You installed a 64-bit version instead of 32-bit, which might help. Now you're setting up your first PC and need advice. If you move the 500MB hard drive from your laptop to your new PC, will the operating system function? Microsoft didn’t confirm it’s possible, but you’re considering backing up everything and upgrading to Windows 10. You can connect via SATA cables, but transferring the OS with new software could be tricky. Thanks for asking.
If your system is very similar, then likely... after countless updates it won’t work well. Windows won’t start unless you specifically request it.
I moved my laptop HDD to the desktop and everything is functioning properly now. I just need to install the desktop driver and uninstall the old laptop driver.
It won't work due to incompatible drivers on motherboards. Many components won't function properly, including Windows, SATA, USB, and other drivers. You'll need a keyfinder to obtain your Windows key, download the correct ISO file for your exact Windows version onto a USB drive, install Windows on another PC using that ISO, activate it with a key, and then reinstall your programs. After that, you can transfer files and media from the old laptop to the new PC, but only files and media—not programs or games.
Desktop and laptop drivers are files that help your computer work with hardware. Windows may warn you if a driver isn't turned on.
I should not support downloading pirated software. However, if you locate Windows 7 from an unreliable source, you could potentially upgrade to Windows 10, but be aware of security risks.
Only Windows 10 remains linked to the motherboard when you set up Windows 7 or 8.1, but activating it using your laptop key unlocks the chance to upgrade to Windows 10 at no cost on your new device.
It must be turned on, but you can simply get a Windows 10 installation tool from Microsoft and run it without a license, though you’ll still need to purchase a key later. I purchased many keys from Reddit—I’m not sure if that’s fully legal, but they seem to work.
