Moving OEM Windows
Moving OEM Windows
Hello. The advice you found online suggests moving your Windows 10 OEM key from an old laptop to a new PC. This might be possible depending on the key's status and licensing terms. However, it’s important to verify whether the key is still valid and can be transferred without fees. If you’re concerned about costs, look into free or low-cost alternatives like using a trial version or checking if your current license can be ported. Always confirm with the official support channels before proceeding.
Connect the Windows installation to a Microsoft account. Not done directly, but many users report it functions smoothly.
You possess three types of licenses:
- OEM (used by manufacturers like Dell, HP, Acer, etc.)
- OEM System Builder (often mistakenly labeled OEM; this is the license a custom builder can obtain to assist in selling the built system)
- Retail (includes the full box and MS support for starting installation and using the operating system).
Only the Retail license can be transferred between computers. If you have either OEM licenses, they cannot be transferred.
