Moving game files to stop Steam from installing them
nope, if he has a retail copy then just install it from the disk?
Copy the game directory from his Steam account and insert it into yours. Then confirm the contents. It may require some time for the system to validate the files, but it should be much faster than downloading as expected. There are no assurances it will function correctly.
I just completed that task without any issues. I transferred all my games from SSD to HDD to prepare for a new SSD installation. My Steam games worked perfectly. I even moved Batman to the HDD because it's not an online shooter and doesn't require fast loading. My Origin titles had some hiccups; I had to reinstall them from the disk. Fortunately, after installing from disk, all downloaded content was restored without needing another download. I wasn’t sure why or how, but it worked. Getting frustrated, I clicked the download link on a few expansion packs and they installed quickly. Remember to keep files unchanged when moving them—especially if you're using a disk installation. In Steam or Origin, go to settings and set the download location to the file you intend to use before moving anything. If you install a game from a disk, ensure the file matches what Steam downloads.
