I examined my parents’ very old computer more closely and noticed something unusual—the GPU isn’t built into the CPU but is connected to the motherboard. This setup is rare; I’ve only seen it on a Chinese GTX 1050 board in one Linux video. It seems motherboards stopped using these integrated GPUs a long time ago, though I don’t know exactly when that happened.
It was a gradual reduction, and it hasn't disappeared completely. Server motherboards still include built-in graphics because high-core Xeons and Epyc CPUs lack integrated graphics. If your server isn’t intended for GPU acceleration, there’s no need to add one—it also simplifies IPMI setup. The last generation of motherboards with low-power built-in graphics was AM3+ (FX). It was also the final CPU line without iGPUs, though not HEDT. Anything beyond that didn’t make sense because HEDT allows dedicated GPUs and provides PCIe lanes for them. If you’re using consumer CPUs, integrated graphics are available.
Many motherboards no longer include built-in graphics since some processors now have their own graphics chips. Check for Ryzen models with the 'G' prefix, or refer to a list of Intel processors that come with integrated Intel HD Graphics to assist in finding alternatives if you prefer not to use a dedicated Graphics Processing Unit.
