The speed rating isn't very useful in practice. My board handles 7600MHz DDR5, yet it stays unstable no matter the configuration. Even with A-Die memory rated for over 8000, I can't achieve consistent stability. The real bottleneck seems to be the RAM size—7800MT+ needs a 1DPC motherboard or at least two sticks. The ASUS Z790 Apex Encore looks like the top choice, though it's pricey and limits you to 96GB with a single DPC. Using two 32GB or two 48GB modules would likely push performance further. Four-slot boards cap around 7200-7600 unless all four slots are used, which usually brings the limit even lower. High-end boards from Strix or Aorus should perform similarly, and I think the Asrock Z790 Nova is also solid.

It's not too bad thinking about the situation. The only boards I have are the X58A UD7 and G1 Assassin. Usually they share BIOS updates, right? If their BIOS files were very different, I wouldn't be able to swap them easily. But I can upgrade my P5Q to a premium version if I add a 2MB chip, and I can move my old P6T to a premium model with a bigger die. Still, sometimes things fail—like when certain USB ports on the back stop working. It’s probably just a common issue with Intel chips. I think this mainly matters for Intel systems because of the inconsistent memory controller speeds. AMD boards seem more stable overall. The numbers suggest they’re likely around 8400-9000 MHz, though some are stuck lower. The X670E is rated for 8000, and the B650M HDV for 7200. A single die probably won’t break it. It’s frustrating when I see high-end chips struggle at higher speeds, but most people should be able to reach the advertised frequencies if they have a stable board. Still, some boards are clearly better than others. The 1DPC series is interesting—why aren’t they more common? Probably because most midrange buyers don’t need 128/192GB RAM anyway. If they can afford RAM upgrades, they can upgrade to a higher-end board.
