I recently heard a coil whine coming from somewhere in my PC today. It’s been there for a while, though I usually work with noise-cancelling headphones, and it’s really bothering me as I tried to locate its source. After checking the PSU, AIO, and GPU, I thought it might be coming from the motherboard itself. Neither I nor my friends have experienced this issue before, so it wasn’t something I considered until recently. I found a YouTube video of someone with a similar problem using an older board from the same manufacturer. People in the video either disabled C-State in their BIOS, sent in a replacement, or just ignored it. I’m unsure which approach to take. My board is less than four months old, so it’s still within warranty. However, I need this system for work and can’t wait for a gigabyte RMA process if they ask me to send my board first. Is it safe to just handle it?
I tried unplugging both the AIO and GPU, but the sound kept happening. When I placed my ear near the PSU, the noise wasn’t coming from there either.
the sole coils mainboard is located on the VRM, featuring those rectangular boxes close to the CPU; within it lies a coil that vibrates, its resonant frequency typically beyond human hearing, though occasionally it may reach frequencies within the audible range known as coil whine. changing the CPU or power supply unit can alter the coil frequency, but this might also stem from RAM overclocking. I’m unsure whether the issue originates from the CPU VRM or the RAM VRM, as VRM settings can be adjusted via BIOS load line calibration.
I noticed I switched the power plan to "High Performance" instead of a balanced setting, causing all cores to run at maximum in the HW Monitor. Once the system was back to "Balanced," it vanished almost entirely until I added a workload. I haven’t made any overclocks on the CPU or RAM.
