Currently, most new boards on the shelf should work with BIOS updates if they’re from a 400 or 500 series. If you’re concerned, check that the board has a label indicating it’s compatible with 5000 series or can perform a BIOS flashback without needing the CPU installed.

Currently, BIOS versions compatible with the 5000 series are "Beta" editions for B450 motherboards, meaning they won't be available. The chances of finding a B550 or A520 board supporting the Ryzen 5000 series are strong, though. The newer 5600G and 5700G processors demand even more recent BIOS updates. If you aim for a 5600X, BIOS compatibility is less likely to be an issue, but for the latest APUs, you might encounter outdated board versions.

The simple fact is that there's no guarantee, unless you physically pick one up at a retail location and it is clearly marked on the package that it's 5000 series ready. Even just a product photo online with that doesn't guarantee you won't actually get one that's been sitting in the warehouse for a while with an older revision instead. However, in the absolute worst case scenario, you can contact AMD and they will mail you a CPU you can use to perform the BIOS update with. If you want to be extra sure, and don't want to have to potentially wait on snail mail from AMD, get one with flashback. With that, you can apply the update without having to have a CPU installed at all. It's not a bad idea to have flashback on your board, anyways, as it can save you if you ever brick the board, through a bad BIOS update or something.
