Hi everyone, I built a solid setup for my son’s HTML design and gaming needs. He’s using a Ryzen 3600, a 16GB MSI B550 Pro with Wi-Fi, and the motherboard supports all high-speed dimming. His workload should stay under 16GB, so I’m asking for your thoughts—does upgrading to faster RAM really help more than just adding more storage? I can fit cheaper options up to 32 or 64GB, so it’s a mix of speed and capacity decision.

Would you consider adjusting the BIOS settings to boost performance? They typically start at around 2166Mhz, but for intensive tasks like professional photo or video editing, you’ll likely need more than 16GB of RAM.

Don't bother chasing 4400, anything above 3800 offers little real gain and won't noticeably improve things. Even hitting 2000 FCLK would only give you a 2:1 latency boost, which adds overhead. Most Zen 2 CPUs can't reach that speed, so a 3200 or 3600 cl16/14 setup works fine. If you need more power, frequency isn't the main concern.

Thank you for the advice. I'm new to boosting overclocks and memory speeds, though I've built PCs before. I usually stick with the default settings since they come ready to go on the motherboard. I'm learning a lot and need to adjust the XMP profile (option 1) to unlock higher speeds. My goal is to reach top performance for programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, and video editing. Right now I have Corsair CMK8GX4M1D3000C16 RAM (two 8GB sticks), but I'm considering tweaking the BIOS settings while keeping stability in mind. I want to push as much speed as possible for creative software. I'm still getting used to these concepts, so please give me time to grow my understanding.

This seems incorrect, I’m not sure where you came across it. Unless you meant something else. A standard 3200 cl16/14 or 3600 cl16 should work fine.

Your current Cheap Corsair 2400Mhz RAM performs adequately for most tasks, but it may benefit from a slight adjustment to boost speed. Time or tweak it up if you need better performance.

You can see how much performance you achieve by manually increasing the clock speed if you're willing to invest time and effort.

Always consider testing. It's unclear how much more sensitive the Infinity Fabric is compared to earlier Ryzen models, based on my own tests and data—especially for gaming. The only noticeable change in FPS is between 3200mhz and 3600mhz. If it behaves similarly with Zen++, you'd likely want to aim around 3200 CL16/14 or 3600 CL16 to match the Infinity Fabric's performance (just from what I've heard). I have limited RAM experience with current Ryzen, so I'm not deeply involved with it. I do have access to a 3950x, but it's mainly used for video editing at work, so I don't often play around with it.
