He’s been experimenting with this chip, especially on the board where it was unlocked. The multiplier reached up to 44x, but it also allowed BCLK straps—locked chips shouldn’t support that. He managed to set the 125 BCLK strap and boost the multiplier to 38x, achieving a score of 4.8 on water for benchmarking. The GPU is a bit slower than the 5775C and has L4 cache, but Haswell clocks are noticeably better than Broadwell CPUs and likely the GPU too.
He was using a high-end board but faced various problems such as inconsistent posting after reboots. The hardware seemed worn, with a rough build from eBay. The CPU also affected pin integrity. It’s unclear whether the board supports L4 cache on Z87 platforms with pre-Broadwell BIOS. Generally, these CPUs should function if you don’t use a Gigabyte board. From his experience, I wouldn’t suggest it for regular use, though I haven’t tested it on a genuine Z97 board. I need to persuade him to bring it over for testing. Regarding graphics, Intel HD pre-Lake chips can be boosted if you know what you’re doing. Previously, all Z-series boards had unlocked multipliers until LGA 1151, after which the IGP became locked. On locked Skylake chips, the IME must be disabled to use AVX and IGP features. My friend successfully achieved this on a waterboard.
I bought one myself (4980HQ) here's to hoping it works and is actually a 4980HQ. as for the board I bought a cheap Z87 from sapphire ($30 shipped). I doubt a Z97 board would work better vs a Z87 board, as this is still technically Haswell/Crystalwell As for iGPU overclocking, I could oc my HD 4600 on my Alienware 17 R1, unlocked chip (4930MX) or not (4700MQ) but I preferred the dGPU (GTX 780M/980M/1070) I wish I still had it so I could get a PGA version of the 4980HQ https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=561463114198
