Hello! I'm planning a home renovation that lets me install Ethernet connections and wireless access points inside my house. I want to confirm if I've misread anything or if there are more suitable options available. So far, I haven't bought anything yet, but I've added some links below for your reference.

Two WAPs refer to a wired router without Wi-Fi, which is acceptable. The switch offers 16 ports; after dedicating one to the modem, 15 remain for use on the patch panel. A 24-port patch panel is available, allowing future expansion or adding devices like speakers.

Modem (ET2251 from Spectrum) | Wired Router (TP-Link TL-R605) | Network Switch (Netgear GS316) | Patch panel (24 ports)
| 2 WAP 12 Drops https://www.newegg.com/netgear-gs316-100...6833122822 | https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/p...002w-006w7

The main idea is clear. I set it up at home using a 24-patch and a 48-port switch. 24 ports for rack gear, 24 ports to connect patch panels from the rack to the wall, then to the attic, and finally throughout the house. The key is choosing a router that performs well. Ideally, something supporting Duel ISPs or adding link redundancy to your switch for better speed, since both your switch and router are only 1Gbps. I’m aware you’re working within a budget. I’m confident in your ability to properly terminate RJ45 cables. I used shielded Cat6A cabling and found the keystones challenging, but the RJ45s performed fine. Unless you plan to upgrade to 10Gbps later, sticking with Cat5 should be simpler—easier to install and fits more efficiently in tight spaces. Sources: I frequently collaborate with structured cabling professionals. This project was done entirely at home.

I’m aiming for a setup around $250–$300 for the router and switch. If your connection is currently at 200Mbps, you might want to consider a mid-range model that can boost performance without breaking the bank. Let me know if you’d like some suggestions!

Asus Merlin is an excellent firmware for Asus routers. I’d choose whatever was available in their supported options. That’s just a matter of personal choice. https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/ Any basic unmanaged switch will do.
