It’s completely normal when you first encounter something—it can stir strong emotions. At first, I was moved by the idea of gnome 2.* I questioned why anyone would think it was a good concept, but after trying it out, I’ve grown to appreciate its style. It’s clever in how it handles multiple tasks at once, keeping things tidy and manageable without feeling cluttered.
Maybe spending more time with it would change my perspective. I’m not planning to do that because I don’t use Linux often enough to get comfortable in other setups (During Ubuntu testing, I felt disappointed when Unity was being phased out right after it became one of the few environments I used...)
It's not unusual for preferences to clash. I need several add-ons to improve the experience, so switching platforms might be the best option. At least Canonical is adding some extensions to the standard setup to make GNOME 3 resemble Unity more closely. If you prefer a different look, KDE offers customizable layouts like Mutiny that can mimic Unity well.
Linux Mint (KDE, Cinnamon or MATE) or Ubuntu MATE could be excellent options to begin with.
