I’m not sure if this stays within the right group, but it still involves networking. My rugged Windows Embedded 7 tablet runs a discontinued firmware from an unknown maker. It functions well after upgrades, though. I need WWAN functionality since the product claims support. A brochure mentions compatibility with a Qualcomm Gobi 3000 card. Do branded cards work on this device, or should I look for a generic option like a Sierra model?

Have you checked online support communities for advice? Because the maker is no longer available, you’ll need to look at what others with comparable models have done. We can’t do much if you don’t specify the exact model or make. If the cards you found are affordable, it might be worth a try. Remember that some original equipment manufacturers restrict hardware support via BIOS to particular brands.

I bought a Sony-branded card intended for a Vaio notebook, though it functioned well. There were issues because the manufacturer's drivers were in Chinese, but they were eventually resolved.
