Hello, your PC is running on an Asus M4A88T-M board with 8GB RAM (four 2GB modules). It hasn’t been used in about two years, and you’re turning it into a media PC. One module failed, leaving three 2GB slots. You’re wondering if you can install a 4GB or 8GB module in the empty slots. You’re right that when mixing RAM, they all operate at the lowest speed and voltage of the installed modules. However, mixing capacities is possible depending on the specific specs of each stick.

You only focus on the storage size, but mixing them won’t cause issues. They’ll still work at reduced performance. It’s usually smarter to upgrade to a kit with at least 2x4GB and use it properly.

Ram functions with the weakest joint
It operates at the slowest movement point
This is its least efficient part

The Phenom X6 operates with DDR3 RAM, so speed improvements shouldn't be significant.

I mainly focus on how much storage fits today, I don’t believe adding more RAM alone will make it a quick system.

I actually placed an order for a used Corsair Vengeance kit, 2 units, costing $20.
