Regarding the devices, newer network cards are built for multi-core support, meaning a 4-core processor pairs well with a NIC that manages four traffic streams. It's unclear how much of a difference this will have in practice, but theoretically it improves efficiency because single-NIC traffic isn't limited by a single core.
