I recently installed a custom-built computer for my child. The headphone port is functioning correctly, and I connected his speakers. For his microphone, he prefers using the headset since we can't afford a proper mic right now. It's a Razer Kraken model. The issue is that the headset is detected as a mic but only captures background sounds like tapping, chair movement, or desk impacts. It doesn't pick up his voice clearly. We've tried using a different mic and earbuds, but the same problem persists. How can I get his headset to capture his voice properly?

Avoid using the headset mute button. Check another microphone connection and ensure it’s connected to a proper mic port.

If the port and plug are dirty, loose, or the wire is damaged, problems may arise. I think the wire might be frayed or the plug dirty, or the connection isn’t solid, leading to faded voices and static with odd sounds. Right now I notice issues with the Mic5 wire in my setup, but it works again when I handle it gently. If you have clear audio but only pick up background noise, that’s unusual. I’ve never seen this before. If it applies, I might not be able to assist. If you notice static and your audio driver has AI noise reduction, enable it—it usually helps. Sometimes the mic sensitivity is too high and causes distortion. The Razer video can guide you through fixing it, though it’s often set to the lowest level by default.
