I recently purchased an i7-13700k before understanding the situation around these processors, and I can't return it. I plan to install it on an MSI Z790-A max Wi-Fi motherboard. I'm seeking guidance on whether to update to the 0x129 microcode and need assistance with preventing premature CPU wear. I have no prior experience with BIOS settings or undervolting, making this my first MSI board. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You recently purchased the chip and might be one that isn't impacted at all. I own a 13900k for a while now, and probably have a defective unit? So far everything seems fine. Also, I use an MSI board; I updated it without any problems. Throughout this period, I haven't encountered any issues. I think updating the BIOS would be enough—no need to stress.

If the chip is brand new, start by updating the BIOS to version 7E07vM6 with the microcode. MSI provides detailed guides to walk you through the process. You can find step-by-step instructions here: https://storage-asset.msi.com/files/pdf/...e_BIOS.pdf

The likelihood of acquiring a retail CPU with microcode already built is quite low, according to me. They haven’t restocked the inventory from warehouses yet. Maybe the 13900k/14900k models, being the highest binned, are in the tightest supply. It’s not that there’s no problem at all; some CPUs may simply take longer to fail compared to others. I’ve noticed many people remain doubtful about 1.55v since it remains quite high. Intel claims it will last five years, but to me that’s still too short—CPUs typically last decades. Usually, after about ten years, the motherboards become harder to locate because they failed long before the CPUs did.
