I just completed assembling my new PC. When it starts up, a notification shows: a new processor has been detected, altering how the storage and firmware TPM are managed. If you didn’t enable this feature, press Y to proceed; otherwise, follow the guidance below. If you have BitLocker or encryption active, the system won’t boot unless you provide a recovery key. Press Y to reset the fTPM, but if you’ve enabled BitLocker or similar, you’ll need a recovery key to continue. Choose N to preserve the current fTPM state and keep the boot process going, meaning TPM functionality won’t activate on the new chip. You can revert to the previous processor to restore TPM-related data. I’ve researched this topic but found few clear solutions. All components except the GPU are new, and even though I meet the system requirements, I’m not keen on Windows 11. What should I do? Thanks.

I received the identical message previously (including the exact GPU setup). I selected Yes, and the system launched smoothly.

You definitely need to reset the TPM for your motherboard to start up.

The system appears brand new with no previous TPM data locked. Just press Y. The motherboard recognizes the new CPU and warns that since you were using firmware TPM before, your current CPU won’t retain those old TPM settings.

No, a CPU upgrade does not necessarily erase the OS drive. It depends on whether you back up your data beforehand and if the new CPU is compatible with your current system.

If those keys are lost or removed, wiping the firmware from the TPM chip usually makes data unrecoverable. Without such protection, simply replacing the CPU won’t help. It’s likely that future Windows versions will rely more on TPM for security, which could create challenges. Right now, BitLocker remains the most widely recognized solution, so about 99% of users affected by this issue should be familiar with it. If your motherboard includes a physical TPM module—whether built-in or purchased—this risk disappears, as firmware-based TPM won’t be impacted. In practice, moving the module to another board might not solve the problem.
