I am going to build a new computer (I know bad idea right now) and am going to use a ASRock MB. Should I choose the H470 or B560 steel legend? Here is my hardware list: CPU: core i5-11400 RAM: teamgroup T-Force Vulcan Z 8x2gb 3200 MHz GPU: will be a RTX 3060 after prices fix themselves PSU: EVGA 500w 80+ Bronze Case: Montech Air X black Storage: 512gb SSD Cooler: Thermaltake UX100

I notice several more projects named “steel legend” than h470. It’s possible there are multiple entries for the same name. Which one aligns best with your needs?

I'm considering either the H470 Steel Legend or B560 Steel Legend. The main point is determining which chipset suits me better since I'm just starting with PC building. My needs are 1080p gaming, so I chose ASRock for its good budget options and solid RGB/ARGB support that fits my case and cooler setup. Updated April 14, 2021 by TalkyRaptor

Ah, B is viewed as superior to H, and neither reaches the highest tier which is Z. Only Z permits overclocking. Some processors have users recommending Z over B even for non-K chips due to memory performance. It’s unclear exactly how H470 differs from B560, as these details shift with each generation. The 4 versus 5 suggests H470 is an earlier model compared to B560. It’s not a strict rule, though. I haven’t paid much attention to the latest Intel updates lately, so I can’t give a definitive answer. Block diagrams could be useful—they show how different chipsets are arranged. With Intel, socket compatibility can be quite limited.

I verified the compatibility and noticed the boards cost the same, so I was curious. Likely I’ll choose the B560 then.

The H series chipset is expected to be more affordable than the B series, possibly due to higher demand for premium features or specific capabilities. The H might offer newer Wi-Fi standards or superior ports, making it preferable depending on your needs. It could also provide advantages like better memory speed if that’s what you require. Without knowing your specific use case, it’s hard to give a definitive answer. I recall the B450 Tomahawk Max was popular because of its solid VRM design, handling heavy chips at a lower price. Its lack of built-in Wi-Fi and potential compatibility issues with PCIe boards were factors that kept costs down, though USB remained a viable option. Edited April 14, 2021 by Bombastinator

1: Purchasing without built-in WiFi
2: No concern about PCIe boards since I’ll use just one x16 slot for the GPU and that’s enough.
3: Discovered the B560 board supports PCIe 4.0, so I’m planning to get it as my main board.

For overclocking purposes, you'll need a Z-series board since the B-series isn't compatible
