Hey gearheads! I’m currently running a 6700k at 4.6ghz, and I’ve been having this mixed feeling with a MMORPG called Black Desert Online. Whenever I get bored or switch to something else, I just launch it in the tray to keep making some cash or save for when I return. Right now it’s using around 40% of its power in the tray, which means I’m either playing old games so I can stream Netflix/YouTube on one screen or struggling with newer titles that don’t support dual screens.
I’ve been thinking about upgrading for a while now. With my budget, I have two choices: an i7 9700k with 16GB LPDDR5X and a TR 2920x with 16GB LPDDR5X at 2933MHz, or a TR 2920x 12-core at 4.4GHz. The TR build would be roughly 100 euros cheaper if my old Corsair RAM works, otherwise it’ll be similar in cost. But it doesn’t appear on the compatibility list, even though other LPDDR5X variants with the same speeds show up there.
I mostly play 1080p at 166Hz and sometimes 3440x1440 at 75Hz with adaptive sync. Personally, I’d prefer more cores—8 seems too few for both BDO in the tray and newer games that need more than four cores. Would switching from my 6700k to a 12-core 4.4GHz TR be a tough decision? It’s just frustrating not having enough CPU power and feeling like I’m stuck with a choice that could’ve been much simpler. This is expensive, and I don’t want buyers regretting their purchase.
Hello, a TR can definitely assist with the multitasking you're looking at. Right now, 9700k performs well in single-thread tasks more than the TR, so you'll likely see higher FPS during gaming compared to multitasking. In practice, the TR offers around 15-25% lower FPS, which shouldn't be noticeable with VSYNC. I own a 1950x and it works great, though I could use better single-thread speed myself. Overall, the TR seems ideal for your needs.
Apologies for the delayed reply. Your feedback was valuable; I proceeded with the TR build. Previously, I struggled to balance lower per-clock performance with my needs, but now I understand the importance of the TR for smooth multitasking. The recent benchmarks show both CPUs performing very closely, with less than 10 fps difference. Thank you again for guiding me through this decision.
Tbh i had no idea it was comming up i was googling it for stores and found the 3900x available for pre-order at a horrible online store out here but at 550 euros. The TR cpu was 360 euros but the 3900x woulda allowed a cheaper mobo going from TR [360 euro] to AM4 [140 euro] so woulda straightened out well enough and both cases woulda had a decent mobo. I woulda gone for a 3900x if i had known it was already comming here in all honesty. But im ok with the 2920x i already ordered its mobo does have so many options that even on higher end AM4 wouldnt be a thing till it fell in the same price category wich woulda resulted in it costing allot more in total.[more than i had] Have you tried OCing your cpu? I have never even seen a TR in real life let alone OC one but i do hope i can set up some of the cores to run at 4.2ghrz seeing evrything i run in the background does not need that high a clock frequency. Maybe set up primary game running in use to be higher priority? Running a game on primary screen while i run BDO in the tray and netflix/YouTube on screen 2 im sure the dark rock pro cooler should be able to handle a overclock solid enough on some cores for the primary thing running, though this is all new to me ofcourse seeing im used to 4core 8threads and OC evrything. Its a 250wtdp cooler and im using a silverstone rv02 case wich years ago managed to cool a fx9590 and 2 asus r9 390's [wich wer horrible cooler wise and required a tim swap]
Sorry for the delayed reply. I increased everything to 4.0 across all cores. You might want to turn off SMT and test 4.2 with adequate cooling.
