Maximum 70 frames per second on RTX 4070 at 1080p resolution
The PC is nearly eight years old and recently had its GPU upgraded to an RTX 4070. The current specs are i5 6600k, 16 RAM, and a 1 TB SSD. Since I no longer use the machine, it was given to my younger sister who bought it to play Fortnite at maximum settings. The game runs fine, but performance remains similar or worse compared to the previous GTX 1080 Ti. FPS increases to around 80 on the new card, yet running it at low settings just to boost frame rate doesn’t make sense. Would I really need a full rebuild and replacement of the motherboard, CPU, and RAM? It seems odd that the game can’t maintain a steady 120fps or higher even at 1080p with the older settings.
Only the GPU has changed, the others remain unchanged.
My guess is that the CPU is limiting performance, because when GPUs surpass CPUs significantly, it's the CPU that controls the FPS you actually see, no matter the in-game graphics settings.
Even though I have the same 6th generation Core i5, I don’t play Fortnite or test it here, so I can’t confirm if the issue lies with the CPU.
It’s probably the case.
Therefore, focus on the latest CPU-MoBo-RAM combinations.
