This weekend I chose to revamp and refresh my gaming PC, and I did. I disassembled the entire unit, thoroughly cleaned all components, applied fresh cooling paste, removed the HDD and other parts, reworked my cable layout, and more. Since it’s finished, I’ve ordered Corsair LL120 RGB fans to replace the faulty NZXT Hue+ strips, aiming for better airflow. I’m also planning to enhance the airflow around my front and top panels, which are quite restrictive. My goal is to optimize cooling so I can fully utilize my CPU and RAM performance.
Here’s a quick rundown of my current specs:
- Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX
- CPU: Ryzen 2700x
- Cooler: NZXT KRAKEN X62
- GPU: Gigabyte RTX 2080Ti
- MBO: Asus Prime X470 Pro
- RAM: 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHz
- Storage: -1TB NVMe Samsung Evo 970 M.2
- SSD: 500GB Samsung Evo 960 SATA
- PSU: Corsair HX750i
I tried using Precision Boost Overdrive to push my CPU over its limits, but the more I researched, the more puzzled I became. The concept of PBO seems to automatically adjust overclocking based on temperature, right? But adding more voltage usually increases heat. Why wouldn’t that limit overclocking and actually improve results? I’m still trying to figure it all out.
Regarding RAM, should I stick with the D.O.H.C. profile in BIOS or upgrade? Some brands really boost performance, while others might not make much difference. Or maybe I should replace my RAM with a cheaper but noticeable upgrade? Also, are there any other BIOS tweaks I should consider?
Since I’ve started using Ryzen, I’m eager to get clear answers and improve my build before investing in a new machine in a few years. Thanks for your help!

PBO limits the CPU temperature to a certain point, and in my 5600X it stayed cool even at around 95°C. It continuously tweaks voltages and clock speeds until it reaches that temperature limit. By lowering the base voltage, PBO begins at a lower value—like starting from 1.1v instead of 1.2v—and then makes small adjustments, such as +0.05v or +0.1v, to keep the CPU cooler while maintaining performance. This approach provides more thermal flexibility for the same clock speeds.
You only need to adjust the necessary settings in your BIOS, such as PBO and XFR. Stick to defaults if you're unsure, or modify what matters most.
