Max performance issues in 3DS Max
Hello everyone, I just installed a new PC and expected it to perform significantly better than my previous one. The specifications are: Intel Core i9-12900KS, MSI RTX 3080 Ti with 3X OC, VENTUS 3X, 12GB DDR5, Gigabyte PRO Z690-A, 64GB DDR5 6200 CL36, Kingston KC3000 M.2 2280 NVMe 1TB, and a 2TB PCIe 3.0 M.2 NVMe with Gigabyte PSU 1000W MSI MPG VELOX 100R MSI MAG CoreLiquid 360R V2. I hoped it would reach around 5GHz, but it caps at about 3.4GHz. When I attempt overclocking, the system crashes. Additionally, trying to boost RAM speed causes the PC to fail to power on. My old machine ran the i9-9960X smoothly at 3.99GHz and has been reliable for work tasks.
Rendering looks good on this Intel ARK page. The base frequency is set at 3.40 GHz for Performance-core and 2.50 GHz for Efficient-core. Temperatures seem normal. Was the 9960X boosted? With a base frequency of 3.1 GHz, you're adjusting 32 threads versus 24 threads. I anticipate the 12900KS will perform better in gaming, but for rendering tasks, the 9960X still seems to have an edge due to its lower-frequency E-cores and higher-core/thread configuration.
It seems like you're dealing with a KS device that has TVB and multi-core improvements. In practice, it should operate above 5GHz even at default settings unless it's under heavy load. If the CPU stays at base speed without boosting, likely overheating or a BIOS problem is the cause. I recommend verifying temperatures, then clearing the CMOS, and if that fails, consider updating the BIOS.
Precisely what I had in mind is reaching up to 5.5GHz, yet it’s falling short significantly, the temperatures remain decent at 35-40°C.
During rendering? If so there is for sure something wrong with its bios settings
Which rendering engine are you utilizing? Keep in mind that not all aspects of the 12900KS reach 5.0 GHz, especially with its dual-P and E cores, so the overall average performance will be lower.

Capture some images of the main window, TPL, and FIVR while the CPU runs a simple task like Cinebench. Check the Limit Reasons section for any red indicators indicating throttling. There may be an explanation in these details about why Turbo Boost isn’t engaging. Sometimes the BIOS incorrectly restricts turbo power, especially if settings are accidentally set to zero watts. This would cause the CPU to limit power and disable Turbo Boost entirely.
Edit – If you’re using MSI Control Center or any Gigabyte utility, try removing it.
Sure, I'm ready. Please share the screenshots when you're done.
