I've been trying to adjust the design of the thermal grizzly's 12th gen contact frame for compatibility with a larger custom IHS on my CPU. The process is mostly about geometry and tolerancing, but I'm still puzzled about why they chose anodized aluminum instead of alternatives like nylon or polypropylene. The material offers protection against corrosion and reduces conductivity, which seems unnecessary since the CPU's operating temperatures are well below melting points. The thermal expansion difference is minimal—about half to a third—and it doesn't seem significant enough to justify the extra steps.

The thermal conductivity could also influence the material selection. Because aluminum conducts heat well but not well with electricity, the decision seems reasonable.

It's affordable, simple to use, and visually appealing.

the thermal contact area of the bracket is extremely small and positioned away from the CPU die compared to the cooler, making it hard to visualize its impact on overall heat dissipation. I don’t think appearance matters much now since the bracket will be fully covered by the cooler once installed. Nylon appears to be a more suitable option for this project. EDIT: Further calculations suggest most non-metallic materials lack the necessary structural strength to serve as effective retention braces. Using a nylon contact frame would likely cause excessive movement under stress. It seems I should explore affordable methods to fully anodize a metal component.
