Match RAM and Mobo for 5900X
Some users are considering a upgrade from 4770k to 5900x. I haven’t assembled a system recently and feel unsure about matching DDR4 RAM with the right motherboard. I’m thinking about the ASUS Strix X570 i, though I’m still deciding on the exact model. The need for an x570 over a B550 is clear due to extra ports, but the M.IIX design is essential, so advice would be appreciated.
On the memory side, the QVL list indicates that 3800C16 or 4000C16 support isn’t available. This matters for AMD builds—does it really matter if it’s listed, or can I still work around it? Also, any RAM suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
QVL offers solid recommendations, though many products outside it still function well. You can still get good results with kits not listed there, especially if you upgrade significantly. For popular options, it's safe; for budget picks from sites like eBay, be cautious. The Crucial Ballistix sets provide excellent value compared to Samsung B-die alternatives. I successfully upgraded my 3200CL16 to 3733CL14.
The labeling affects compatibility and performance expectations, but it doesn't change the hardware itself.
It shouldn't be this way, but XMP is actually an Intel branding. Most kits come with it and it functions perfectly.
Same configuration but adjusted to tCL14 for 3733MT/s. Attempted 3800MT/s tCL16 was possible, but my FLCK maxes out at 1866MHz—so not feasible. I can reach tCL14 at 3800MT/s, though it needs a minimum of 1.5V on DRAM, which isn't practical for regular use.
