I just got an Acer notebook equipped with an Atom chip. It’s running Windows 10 Home 64-bit with only 1GB of RAM. I bought it for curiosity. I have a solid-state drive ready, and if I can find a 2GB stick for free, I’d upgrade the memory. The main question is which operating system would work best for my needs? Thinking about retro arcade games, I might even try building a custom setup. Since I don’t need to stay online, an older, unsupported Windows version wouldn’t be a problem.

Linux or a BSD is a very minimal option. You can definitely skip the graphical interface completely. Those components ran at low clock speeds, sometimes even with dual cores. I’m surprised Win10 works on such a system—it seems the operating system is barely capable.

It's a 1c 2t CPU clocking 1.66ghz; I was taken aback to see 10 running on it. Since I haven't received it yet, I can't say exactly how much resources are being used. I think it should handle everything fine without a GUI setup. The mame forums likely have guides, and once installed, it should boot up quickly into MAME.

Some very thin graphical interfaces exist. Gnome isn't among them. There are KDE options that work well, or there were alternatives before.

Hello, you can check out Recalbox, but there is no guarantee it will work fine. Without testing you won't get to know (especially with Atom processor). It's a nice OS with all what you need to run old games. Eventually you can install lightweight Arch Linux with also lighweight enviroment. Or Debian, but without all suggested packages. i3, openbox, LXDE i XFCE should be suitable for it.

This whole setup process becomes quite tricky quickly. I've installed a 32-bit XP to test the system. I plan to try version 0.106 through Advanced MAME and check if the games work. If not, I'll explore Arch Linux options. Appreciate your feedback!
