Make Spotify your primary media player by adjusting your settings.
I'm not entirely certain that this thread belongs here, but it's my best guess. If it would make more sense somewhere else, then I apologize. Anyways, I have a question that I've been trying to find the answer to for a long time, and I figured that if no one here has the answer, it probably does not exist. That question is this: How do you set Spotify as your default media player? By this, I mean specifically how do you get a media button on a keyboard to open up Spotify. Play/Pause/Stop/Forward Track/Backward Track all work, because they simply change the track on any open media player. However, on my keyboard there is a Media button that opens up the media player. It used to open up both Spotify AND Windows Media Player. I uninstalled WMP and now when the button is pressed, Spotify opens as usual, but it seems that the button attempts to run 'shell32.dll' and opens a dialogue box because it does not know what application to open the dll with. Anyways, long story short, I want that button to open Spotify and ONLY Spotify. Thanks to anyone who can help with my predicament.
In Windows 8.1 and likely 7, access Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs > Set Default Programs (or type "default programs" in the search bar and click set default). Locate the desired application on the list, choose it, then click set default. Additionally, Windows 8.1 offers another method: Settings Charm > Change PC Settings > Search and Apps > Defaults, then navigate to the music tab, pick your music player (search can also help), and apply the settings. It’s a good idea to repeat this for the default photo viewer and video player to ensure you’re using reputable apps.
That was the first attempt I made. Spotify isn't listed among the available apps. Can I add it manually? Kloaked, on 24 Sept 2014 - 6:10 PM - mentioned that I meant a button for launching the defaoult media program, not opening files with Spotify. It's already in my taskbar and always running. I just prefer having a dedicated button for starting Spotify quickly, and I thought it was easy, but I might have missed something simple.
I thought this would be a straightforward solution and that I was overlooking something small. In reality, I have an old Logitech Corded Keyboard using a ps/2 port—just for the fun of it. Since I don’t have a programmable keypad, my goal was to make the media button function work. It seems there might not be a way to achieve that with what I currently have. Appreciate the assistance!
