Many folks mention Motherboard, particularly in the US and Canada, while Mainboard is more common in Germany. There isn't a strict rule, but these terms are widely understood in their respective regions.

It doesn't really matter. I typically use a motherboard for PC-related stuff and a mainboard for devices like phones and tablets with one or two central chips, which don't have swappable parts or expansion slots like a regular PC or laptop would. That's just my preference.

A motherboard and mainboard are essentially the same thing, according to Skiiwee29.

Să viu placa de bază... dar mainboard este adecvat. Am observat că pot avea carde extras anexate, cum ar fi "extensions". Mainboard este un po mai abstrus... // în română se spune "placa de bază" sau "placa principal", "base board", "placa essential"

Both options are valid. The motherboard includes daughterboards, but it doesn't have a son or father board. It's used for connecting devices like consoles and CNC machines—custom-built setups.

Both options are accurate, but in the US it's common to use "motherboard." You're unlikely to confuse anyone if you say "mainboard," since the terms are generally understood by enthusiasts. Interestingly, on French tech platforms like TechTube, "carte mère" is frequently used—it translates to "mother card"—which suggests it's the preferred term there too. This aligns with the Wikipedia entry being labeled "Carte mère."
