The topic seems overly simplistic, but if I had to pick: Server: Linux; NIX-based systems; Windows preferred mainly for developer resources. Thin and light—meaning suitable for laptops or low-end machines? Either way, I prefer Linux. (I’m currently using Ubuntu) Gaming laptop: Still Windows mainly due to extensive software availability. (You’ll need some Linux expertise to install games, apps, and drivers effectively. Windows handles everything smoothly.)

MacOS would host most of Windows' titles through Steam, making it the top choice for everything except servers, where Windows or Linux would dominate.

I believe the issue is flipped, as the question is quite broad and relies heavily on personal preferences... except in gaming, where there are no real substitutes (not considering consoles, and other operating systems don’t match Windows’ offerings).

What you meant was exactly that. The question seemed too simple, and the situation is actually more complex than it appears. I hope I can have been clearer about that.

Variety in vehicles, fashion, beverages, entertainment, dwellings, living spaces, and systems arises because no single option suits all preferences. For your four areas, the straightforward options are: Server - Linux Workhorse - OS X 1) Thin n Light - Linux 2) Gaming Laptop - Windows 3) Longer thoughts: 1) It hinges on what you mean by "Workhorse." If you're a media professional or content creator with limited tech skills, OS X is familiar. For demanding tasks like heavy processing or mining, any of the three might work... 2) A lightweight Linux shines on budget devices or for notebook tasks. 3) If you're serious about gaming and need smooth performance, stick with Windows. Only practical is Linux, unless you're open to uncertainty...

Server - Windows (I’ve exhausted three days trying to set up Linux and now I’m frustrated)
Workstation - Windows/Linux dual boot, slim design - OS X/Windows dual boot, mainly because I prefer MacBook style and they’re very thin and light
Gaming Laptop - Windows, but I wouldn’t choose one for school, work or travel
Mobile device - Windows/Linux dual boot

I run Windows on my gaming PC, Linux on my work machine (SSD firmware projects), and a Macbook Air for casual browsing. Each one works well in its own situation.

Here’s a refreshed version of the content:

The comparison table covers Windows, macOS (PowerPC and others), and Linux distributions. Pros highlight its widespread use, ease of finding support, compatibility with Apple hardware and software, cost-effectiveness, and the availability of many free options. Cons point to frequent bugs, inflexibility, compatibility issues with older programs, and a steep learning curve due to frequent updates. My take is that it works when you need it, but it can be frustrating at times. It suits those who prefer Apple products and want to stay within the ecosystem, as well as developers needing specialized tools. It’s great for general tasks and servers, but not ideal for custom workloads or anything requiring proprietary software. The architecture makes it unique, and running closed-source apps adds another layer. Overall, it’s a solid choice for many, though not perfect.
