For those who didn't read the original post before replying, it's clear this isn't my area of expertise. I don't use Mac OS and have limited experience. I haven't had AV or firewall protection for about 6 to 8 years without any problems. I install and scan occasionally but always wipe my OS yearly—so it's not a big concern for me. But others shouldn't worry. My little sister doesn’t need technical help with AV, especially off-topic. I just wanted to assist with Mac-related AV issues. P.S. Macs have been getting viruses for years, it’s not new.

I mentioned it clearly (and I meant it), you don’t require an AV.

Someone unfamiliar with tech can easily stumble upon misleading content online without realizing it’s a scam. Without understanding phishing tactics, they won’t know how to spot fake emails or sites. This lack of knowledge means they’re more vulnerable to attacks, so having an antivirus program adds extra protection.

I suggest using Bit Defender Virus Scanner. It’s free, available through the official store, and performs well compared to alternatives like ICare, whose free version has many features restricted behind a paywall.

Why take the chance? You might think using a condom is enough, even if she takes the pill.

Three Macs have been in the home over the past decade, with two still working, none have caught any malware, and it’s safe to say my parents aren’t very cautious about suspicious online ads.

Oh yeah, those tabs were a bit much. I’d prefer ClamXav, but with my old iMac it worked fine and didn’t cause any problems.
